Obituary of Phyllis Mary Goodwin

On Monday, December 27, 2021, Phyllis Mary Goodwin passed away at the Long Term Care Facility of the Wainwright Hospital, at the age of 92 years. Phyllis was born in D’Arcy, Saskatchewan, on July 11, 1929, to John and Winnifred Alderson, where they lived with her sisters Florence and Olive, and her brother, Clifford. Phyllis left the farm to travel to Calgary to earn her Registered Nursing Aide certificate. She graduated from the very first RNA class in Alberta and moved to Wainwright to be the first RNA at the Wainwright Hospital. She worked at the Wainwright Hospital for over 40 years, until her retirement, and her career was a great source of pride for her. While working in Wainwright, she met and fell in love with Tom Goodwin and they were married in 1950. They were blessed with 7 wonderful children – Jim, Rick, Donna, Wayne, Bev, Brian and Randy. Most of them also made their homes in Wainwright, while one moved to Saskatchewan and one moved to Amisk. Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren would, of course, follow. Family was extremely important to Phyllis and her home was a hub for all to gather, which happened often. She especially loved her Great Grandchildren and considered their visits one of her greatest joys. Planting and growing flowers was another thing Phyllis loved. She had a very green thumb and would often winter her Geraniums in the kitchen so that she could plant them again next year. She loved to have lots of color in her flower beds and pots, and could often be found sitting outside enjoying the warmth of the sun while looking at all her pretty flowers and breathing in their wonderful aromas. Phyllis leaves to mourn her children: Rick Goodwin of Wainwright, Donna (Zen) Artindale of Wainwright, Wayne Goodwin of Wainwright, Bev (Melvin) Schmalzbauer of Kindersley, Brian (Pam) Goodwin of Wainwright, and Randy Goodwin of Wainwright; her grandchildren: Ryan (Megan) Goodwin of Wainwright, Lori (Curtis Grabler) Goodwin of Amisk, Derek (Charlene) Schmalzbauer of Warman, Shawn (Melody) Goodwin of Amisk, David (Liz Herring) Artindale of Carstairs, Becca (Jamie Steinborn) Goodwin of Wainwright, Angela (Grant) Slaght of Drumheller, and Nolan (Mackenzie) Goodwin of Wainwright; as well as her Great Grandchildren: Parker, Carter, Ardeya, Tasia, Jayde, Brevin, Elizabeth, Nathan, Wren, Finley, Cheyenne, Olive, Remi and Levi. She was predeceased by her parents John and Winnifred, sisters Florence and Olive, brother Clifford, husband Tom, son Jim, and granddaughter Crystal. As per her wishes, no public funeral will be held. If so desired the family suggests any memorial contributions made in Phyllis’s name be made to the Wainwright Hospital Long Term Care Palliative Room, The Canadian Cancer Society, or any charity of the donors choice.
