Obituary of Herb den Ouden

Herbert den Ouden peacefully passed away at Prairie Edge Vermilion Health Centre on August 17, 2020. Herb went to be with the Lord at the age of 88 years. Herb was predeceased by his loving wife and travel companion Anne den Ouden, his brother-in-laws John Speelman and Jan de Rooij, and his parents Aart and Hermina den Ouden from Pernis, Holland. He will be lovingly remembered by his sisters, Jetta Speelman and Willy de Rooij, his nephews Simon Speelman (Sharon), Art Speelman (Margaret), and Randy Speelman (Mary Lou), his niece Helma Scheermeijer (Freek), and numerous great nieces and nephews. Herb was born in Pernis, Holland on December 7, 1931. At the age of 17, Herb decided to venture to a new world, Canada. After a short pause in Halifax, Herb moved to Vermilion. He went straight to work for a local farmer, Gordon Larson. After working as a local grain hauler, Herb spent many years working as a Vehicle Safety Inspection Officer before retiring to pursue other endeavors such as establishing his own Roto Tilling and Grass Cutting business. In 1989, Herb married the love of his life, Annie den Ouden. Together they traveled to many places, including their favorite spot, Towerpoint Park in Arizona. Herb had several passions such as baseball (playing, coaching, umping, watching, and collecting memorabilia) and creating amazing wooden bowls and ornaments. One of his greatest accomplishments was building his own home where he lived until 2019. Special thanks to Herb's caregivers, doctors and nurses at Vermilion Long Term Care Center, Pastor Adam Kennedy, and the staff at Creech’s Funeral Home for their help and understanding. These kind acts honoring Herb will always be remembered. Due to Covid restrictions, a private family service will be held on August 21, 2020. Condolences for the family may be offered at www.creechsfuneralhomes.ca. Flowers will be gratefully declined. If so desired, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Vermillion The Royal Canadian Legion.
