Carl was a cheater and at more than just death throughout life. Many nights of cheating at board games, cards, and crib, he was up for anything you threw at him and always made it fun. He was a proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was a stubborn man and in his life or not he loved you without condition and never turned you away. His hugs were the real deal; never stiff, fake or cold and that, that was the difference. He loved to sling the BS over coffee & would never say no if you asked for help and he could provide. In their early years he could often be found at Sammy’s teaching at least one of his grandchildren to flick creamers at across tables. He is remembered by his grandchildren for many things notably late night sleepovers full of endless movies; breakfasts with mysterious ingredients; never passing a Dairy Queen without a Peanut Buster Parfait; his love for a Teen Burger & root beer, and backyard cookouts in old wash tubs. Let us not his resourceful way of clearing snow with his electric lawn mower. As the kids grew Carl kept his connection to his beloved granddaughter by watching the latest movies and trying to fit in; often slow rollin’ down main street looking for Laura and her friends leaning out the window of some old rusted out vehicle hat turned sideways yelling “Wazzup!” as the girls cringed and ran in embarrassment but they all loved him. He was also the type of man that would give you the shirt off his back or share the food he had collected from the local dumpster- “There’s nothing wrong with that shit & they just throw it away” he’d say showing up with a van full of cakes and cupcakes for his grand-kids and he made his rounds too. Carl was a carpenter and there was always some part of his home under construction. Carl loved to work with wood and was an excellent Carpenter completing projects locally and with his Uncle Jim McGinnis in Edmonton, AB. When his grandson showed an interest in woodwork Carl was proud and fast to teach him anything he would absorb. Carl also loved to tinker and take stuff apart. He scavenged the dump, alleyways and garage sales for almost anything he could fast fix and resell or give to someone he might know needed something. He could teach you anything from changing the wax seal on a toilet to stuffing a turkey and often did. Experimenting with cooking was something Carl often loved doing just not something everyone else always loved tasting or cleaning if he was visiting you when this “experimenting” was taking place. Fancy footwork found Carl an incredible dancer & some of the best memories were of both him teaching and whipping his daughter and granddaughter around the dance floor. Gifted with a beautiful voice and musical ear he was able to master the guitar on his own early on. Carl loved children and loved to treat all children with his special brand of humor, never leaving anyone out. He is much loved and remembered by his children for many things but most fondly his musical talents; Queens, Another One Bites the Dust and Movin’ On by Merle Haggard on repeat by eager request.
Carl was never ashamed and never hid who he was; he didn’t care what other people thought. Carl never lived his life dancing to the beat of anyone’s drum but his own. He was the most resilient man I ever had the privilege of knowing. May you finally rest in peace.
Big wheel's rollin', big wheel's rollin', movin' on
Big wheel's rollin', gotta keep 'em goin'
Big wheel's rollin', movin' on
